WHAT IF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WAS DIFFERENT? In many places, "professional development" is a dirty word and conjures up images of a stale staff lounge, a presenter reading PowerPoint slides and staff members committing subtle acts of non-conformity.
It's the 19th Century factory model, where
each teacher sits in rows and the expert transmits prepackaged information.
What if staff development met the needs of teachers in the 21st century? Imagine if schools could integrate in-person dialogue with the latest Web 2.0 technology tools. Teacher Commons is a step toward changing the way Borman Middle School (an underperforming, low-SES school) creates and conducts professional development. . |
